To meet our legal obligations as a financial services provider (including anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer requirements), we verify your identity when you open an account. During verification, the Mela app uses your device camera to capture images of your government-issued ID and a selfie or short video of your face.
How we use it. These images are used solely to confirm that you are the person shown on your ID, to detect fraud and impersonation (liveness checks), and to comply with law. We do not use face data for advertising, marketing, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to identity verification, and we never sell it.
Who processes it. Face matching and liveness checks are performed by our identity verification provider, Sumsub (Sum and Substance Ltd.), acting on our behalf under a data processing agreement. We do not share face data with any other third party except where required by law, regulation, or legal process.
Where it is stored. Verification images are stored by Sumsub and, for our compliance records, in Mela's encrypted storage on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States, with access restricted to authorized compliance staff.
Face ID. If you enable Face ID to unlock the app, the check is performed entirely by Apple on your device. Mela never receives or stores your Face ID data.
Retention and deletion. We keep identity verification records, including face images, for as long as you have an account and for five (5) years after it is closed, as required by U.S. record-keeping rules for financial institutions, and then delete them. You may request deletion earlier by contacting us at support@melafinance.com, and we will delete the data unless we are legally required to keep it.
